Case Study: Bridging the Digital Divide in Cape York

Cape York Digital Network

Challenge:

Indigenous communities in Cape York faced a significant digital divide. Limited access to technology and the internet hindered educational opportunities, economic development, and efficient communication with government services.

Solution:

As part of Noel Pearson’s transformative enterprises, Steven Pelham played a key role in the rollout of the Cape York Digital Network (CYDN). This $5.6 million project established a digital IT infrastructure network across 10 Cape York communities. Each community received a computer cafe managed by local Indigenous members, high-speed video conferencing facilities, and wireless internet access for residents and businesses.

Impact:

The CYDN played a crucial role in upgrading the Cape York area to ADSL technologies and subsequently fiber optic capabilities like the National Broadband Network (NBN). This improved internet access empowered communities, facilitated communication, opened doors for further development, and economic participation in the broader Australian economy.
